High Tea Celebration
Buffalo Soldier Corp
Annual Reunion Fundraiser
High Tea Tradition
This break for tea and small treats became a fashionable social event as it spread among friends and their acquaintances. During the 1880’s the ladies of society would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was typically served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. High Tea highlighted the often overlooked contributions of women during the American Civil War. When Northern and Southern soldiers or civilians consumed tea during the Civil War, they usually did so for medicinal purposes, although in high culture circles, especially in the North , during afternoon tea ceremonies they enjoyed the elegance of this bygone era and the experience of High Tea— was a glorious tea, celebration with delicious finger sandwiches and miniature pastries.
